Lançamentos DVDs/CDs 11.03.08

Oi pessoal

DVDs
Baker, Chet
Torino 1959/Stuttgart 1988 [IMPROJAZZ]
NTSC/Region 0. This is a truly outstanding and long awaited release, as the present Japan concert is most certainly Chet's best filmed performance ever. He seems to be in good shape and mood here, and plays and sings beautifully, backed by Harold Danko's amazing piano. Nothing here seems to foretell Baker's death, which would happen less than a year later. The program includes both classic standards Chet had recorded in his early years, like the perennial "My Funny Valentine" or the opener "Stella by Starlight", some tunes by Baker's favorite Jazz star, Miles Davis, and a few tunes he had added recently to his repertoire, like Elvis Costello's "Almost Blue". ImproJazz. 2008.

Genesis
Remember Knebworth [VOICEPRINT]
NTSC/Region 0. This DVD chronicles the 1978 concert at Knebworth which featured British band Genesis as headliners. The special guests and supporting artists were Jefferson Starship, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Devo, Knebworth veteran Roy Harper, Jazz Rock from Brand X and the Atlanta Rhythm Section. There is footage of Genesis at the sound check as they run through their then current single, 'Many Too Many'. It includes 'The Lady Lies' from their album Then There Were Three. This DVD is a revealing look at the set up of the stage and sound system during the week leading up to the concert and of course the British weather shows what it can do to make promoters suffer. The package comes with a reproduction copy of the official program which was sold on the day only from within the concert arena itself.

Gillespie,Dizzy
London Concerts 1965 & 1966 [IMPROJAZZ]
NTSC/Region 0. Considered one of the very first Bebop tenor saxophonists, Dexter Gordon began playing clarinet at the tender age of seven. By the time he was fifteen the precocious tenorist had already played in bands with Chico Hamilton and Buddy Collette! He formed part of the Lionel Hampton and Louis Armstrong orchestras in the early forties, and joined the Billy Eckstine band and recorded with Charlie Parker in 1945. Gordon possessed a very distinctive and profound sound. The performance included on this DVD showcases Gordon's many talents in an intimate quartet setting at San Francisco's Maintenance Shop; a club that also witnessed one of the last filmed performances by pianist Bill Evans. ImproJazz.

Rich,Buddy Big Band
Live 1986 & 1973 [IMPROJAZZ]
NTSC/Region 0. Considered one of the best Jazz drummers of all time, Buddy Rich was born into a family of vaudeville entertainers. His talent for rhythm was first noted by his father, who saw that Buddy could keep a steady beat with spoons at age one! By the time he was 11, Rich was already performing as a bandleader. He received no formal drum instruction, claiming later that instruction would have only degraded his musical talent. He also never admitted to practicing, saying that he only played the drums during performances. During his extended career, he played with Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Benny Carter, Harry James, Les Brown, Charlie Ventura, and toured with Jazz at the Philharmonic, as well as leading his own band and performing with various all-star groups. ImproJazz.

Terry,Clark
Quintet/Big Band In Concert [IMPROJAZZ]
NTSC/Region 0. Clark Terry began his career in the early 1940s and achieved long-lasting fame playing in some of the best big bands in Jazz history. Terry also recorded regularly with small groups and was part of the Thelonious Monk Octet in the late '60s. As a leader, Clark Terry recorded several albums and fronted a noted quintet featuring trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, as well as a short lived but outstanding big band, which he called the "Big Bad Band". These are the two formats in which we find him on this amazing DVD, which features Terry playing both trumpet and flugelhorn, and singing his celebrated scat composition "Mumbles". As a bonus, we offer a ballad medley recorded in Copenhagen presenting Terry alongside baritone saxplayer Pepper Adams in their only known appearance together. ImproJazz.

ATLAS SOUND
Let The Blind Lead Those Who C.. [Kranky]
2008 solo album from Deerhunter frontman/provocateur Bradford Cox. Here on Let The Blind..., Cox moved out of dank nightclubs filled with eternal existential drone Punk, and relaxed at home in his Grant Park, Atlanta bedroom. This is, essentially, a bedroom album, mixing the Garage Rock and Ambient Electronic influences previously explored with Deerhunter in a new context, with newly explored recording techniques, mainly lap-top based. The result is 14 songs of melancholy and mania. This is a true solo album, entirely created and produced by a single person. Kranky.Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/atlassound

BAUHAYS
Go Away White
Go Away White’ was recorded in 18 days at Zircon Skye in Ojai, with singer Peter Murphy, bassist David J, guitarist Daniel Ash, and drummer Kevin Haskins playing together as a band in one room, taking first takes as final cuts. So, a new record but apparently a final one, the band having decided to release it as a posthumous swan song.

BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO CAJUN MUSIC
Beginner'S Guide To Cajun Music
From Joseph Falcon's 'Lafayette' in 1928 to Clifton Chenier's infectious 1955 recordings, this collection spotlights the irresistible appeal of the unique Louisiana hybrid which is Cajun music.

COLTRANE, JOHN
Quartet-Complete 1963 Copenhagen [GAMBIT]
Two CD set. This release presents a long hard-to-find concert by the classic Coltrane Quartet performing extended versions of Coltrane's compositions "Mr. PC", "Impressions", "The Promise" and "Naima", plus versions of Mongo Santamaría's "Afro Blue" and Richard Rodgers-Oscar Hammerstein's "My Favorite Things". Some of them are authentic tours de force in which the musicians seem fully immersed. Roland Kirk was also in town and after the concert the two saxophonists went to Copenhagen's famous Café Montmartre to play during a well remembered jam session, backed by Kirk's band. Coltrane's playing is risky and adventurous. Gambit.

COLTRANE, JOHN
1961 Helsinki Concert [GAMBIT]
John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy played and recorded together on many occasions. However, given the quality of their music and the high level of creativity involved in every single one of their performances, all new additions are always welcome. In this case, we present a previously unissued concert recorded from a radio broadcast in Helsinki in 1961, during the European tour in which Dolphy joined Trane’s legendary quartet. The Helsinki performance showcases both Coltrane and Dolphy’s musical explorations in search of new ways to express themselves. As a bonus to this newly heard performance, we offer another concert set. This is a true rarity, for the April 1, 1960 Düsseldorf concert marked Coltrane’s last gig with Miles in 1960. Gambit.

COLTRANE, JOHN QUINTET
Complete November 18 1961 Paris Concerts [GAMBIT]
Two CD set. These performances, long unavailable on CD, were not included on the seven CD set The European Tours. None of the music compiled here is duplicated on that set. Backed by Tyner, Workman and Jones, Coltrane decided in mid-1961 to try his luck with his first European tour as a leader. The group which crossed the ocean, however, wasn’t a quartet but a quintet, due to the addition of alto sax and flute player Eric Dolphy. The Olympia performances are full of excitement, with Trane and Dolphy exploring their own musical limits, although both of them still exhibit a more melodic style than the one that would characterize them a few years later. They play beautiful arrangements of the tunes, with Dolphy constructing subtle counterpoints to Trane. Seven tracks. Gambit.

COLTRANE / GARLAND
Complete Recordings [ESSENTIAL]
Three CD set. The seminal quartet recordings compiled on this collection were made during a transitional period in John Coltrane’s musical career. He had first joined the Miles Davis Quintet in 1955 and would form his own celebrated quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones in 1960. In the intervening years, he overcame his narcotics addiction and began to expand on his own musical ideas while experimenting with both the Thelonious Monk Quartet and the Miles Davis Sextet. Although Trane belonged to both the Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk groups, he also recorded studio sessions with other musicians and presented his own albums during this period. Among them were many quartet sides, all of them featuring Red Garland on piano and Paul Chambers on bass. 25 tracks Essential Jazz Classics.

CONCRETE PROJECT
Concrete Project [KAJMERE SOUND]
Extraordinary 2008 compilation put together by Mahasa Music label kingpin 'Dcee'. Twelve multi-genre, hard hittin' concrete tracks that will make your neck snap and your body bounce. Swedish rising star Kissey Asplund (R2) takes you to another place with the opener 'Atomic Light N Sound' and seasoned veterans like the Breakestra (Ubiquity), lay out the classic Funk. There isn't a shortage of beats either as DJ PNS (Molemen) and the Eurorhythmics (AllNatural) provide that bump for your speakerbox, but the levels hit the red with dancefloor ready BSTC and with Casamena's (Yoruba) remix for the highly sought after 'Musique De Ve'.

DAVIS, MILES QUINTET
Winter In Europe 1967 [GAMBIT]
An astounding 1960 seldom-heard performance by the Miles Davis/John Coltrane quintet. It presents one of the few 1960 recordings by the legendary formation in its only European tour, before Coltrane's departure to form his own band. Includes the bonus track 'Milestones' that comes from a rare radio broadcast and features George Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. Gambit. 2005.

DESMOND, PAUL QUARTET WITH JIM HALL
First Place Again [GAMBIT]
Two of the most lyrical of all the great Jazzmen, the September 5-7, 1959, First Place Again sessions mark the first recorded collaboration between the superlative alto saxophonist Paul Desmond and guitar giant Jim Hall. The participation of the great MJQ bass and drum tandem of Percy Heath and Connie Kay keep things swinging in epic fashion. While the brilliance of each musician is evident throughout all eight tracks, these sessions showcase the band's capacity to create a lyrical, elegant, and always swinging collective sound. Gambit Records. 2005.

GREEN, GRANT
Organ Trio & Quartet [GROOVE HUT]
This great Jazz two-fer features two of guitarist Grant Green's '60s work trio and quartet featuring incredible organ work from Sam Lazar and Big John Patton. This release contains the complete albums Space Flight (1960) and Iron City (1967). Groove Hut. 2006.

MANN/COREA
Complete Latin Band Sessions [GAMBIT]
2007 two CD set containing the complete recordings of Herbie Mann with Chick Corea, consisting of the three complete albums Monday Night at the Village Gate, Standing Ovation at Newport and Latin Mann: Afro to Bossa to Blues (all recorded in 1965), plus all seven of the tracks from the album The Roar of the Greasepaint the Smell of the Crowd in which both musicians are present. For the first time ever on one release! This material is either long out of print or is only available in Japan on limited edition! Includes a 12-page comprehensive booklet! 26 tracks. Gambit.

VINIL LP

Banhart, Devendra
Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon [XL]
Devendra's album was recorded at home in Topanga, So. California, co-produced by Noah Georgeson and Devendra. There is a wide but natural stylistic breadth evident, running the gamut of gently crooned ballads like 'Bad Girl', the loping blues of 'Saved', epic rockers such as 'Seahorse', reggae tunes, sultry South American stunners like 'Cristobal' and a few fun surprises mixed in for good measure. This CD is very much the work of Devendra's regular touring line-up strategically complimented by a few very special guests. The essence of the Topanga Canyon music scene of alumni neighbors like Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal, Joni Mitchell, Mick Fleetwood and the Doors inhabit the sound and vibe of these recordings. Banhart's whole "freak folk" tag is gone, replaced with this classic rock album. XL Records. 2008.

Childish, Wild Billy & The Blackhands
Live In The Netherlands [DAMAGED GOODS]
Vinyl LP pressing. Live In The Netherlands was recorded live with one microphone on tour in Holland in May 1993. This musical gem is the stuff of which myths and legends abound. Billy Childish, having heard the Blue Fields Express, wanted his own broken down engine of a group and put out the word. This is the glorious result. Childish, who remains one of the most prolific musicians in the UK, has also recorded as a solo artist and member of The Milkshakes, Thee Headcoats and many other raw and rockin' outfits.
